XENOPHON. Las Obras, translated into Spanish by Diego Gracián. Salamanca: Juan de Junta, 1552. 2° (294 x 200mm). Title with large woodcut arms of Philip II in red and black, woodcut initials, printer’s device on final leaf verso, black letter, printed in double columns. (Title-page and final leaf re-margined.) Contemporary limp vellum, manuscript title (lacks ties, front inner hinges split, spine becoming brittle).
FIRST EDITION IN SPANISH. The Greek historian Xenophon (fl. 4th century BC) is the earliest known writer on hunting. His treatise entitled 'De la caca y monteria' appears at the end of the volume, possibly marking the first occasion that a treatise on hunting was printed in Spanish. Gracian dedicates his translation to Philip of Spain who married Mary Tudor two years after it was printed. The inked price of 290 maravedís is inserted in the last line of the title-page.
