The present candlesticks appear to incorporate genuine 16th century rock crystal which has been later mounted, probably in the late 19th century. This was a known practice among goldsmiths such as the famous Reinhold Vasters (1827-1909), based in Aachen, whose designs for a similar pair of candlesticks and crucifix in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, were published in 1986 by Yvonne Hackenbroch ('Reinhold Vasters, Goldsmith' in the Metropolitan Museum Journal 19/20, pp. 202-203, figs. 76-78).
