Lot Essay

In 1989 Humberto and Fernando Campana presented the Desconfortável (uncomfortable) collection of furniture at the Nucleon 8 Gallery in São Paulo. The exhibition presented a group of tables, chairs and screens made with steel sheet and represented the beginning of a new chapter for Brazilian design. The Campana brothers asserted their radical and strong identity presenting a collection based on what they call ‘the poetry of errors’. The imperfections and lack of homogeneity of the basic material chosen is dignified in their work and becomes an essential element of their free and innovative language.
The present lot is a rare and early work. The sheets of welded steel used to make the bench, shaped as a large fish, exemplify the brothers’ gift of revealing the inherent poetic qualities of the material. Commenting upon the raw finish of the metal surface, Humberto observed “the idea was to take advantage of the error, to see poetry in the error.” This work is the synthesis of the brothers’ ideals, combining a free language with the urban chaos that inspires their work.

This lot is sold with a certificate of authentication from the Estudio Campana.
