Lot Essay

In 1958 Sottsass initiated his appointment as artistic director of Milan's Il Sestante gallery with a presentation of enamelled copper plates and vases, exhibited November - December 1958. The majority of designs featured ideographic symbols to include grids and parallel lines, reflecting the the designer's exposure, whilst recently working in New York, to the meditative abstractions of modern artists to include Ellsworth Kelly, Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko.
