ABBEY OF MARIENTHAL (diocese of Halberstadt, founded 1143) – Manuscript deeds on vellum, granting land and tithes in Saxony and the Low Countries to the Cistercian abbey of Marienthal:
Volrad von Kranichfeld, Bishop of Halberstadt, granting to Theodoric, Abbot of Marienthal, the tithes of Rotdorp and Merdorp resigned to him by Ludorf, Ritter von Esbek, who holds the two properties in fee respectively from Gebhard, Graf von Wernigerode, and Friedrich, Graf von Kirchberg, with an extensive list of witnesses. Halberstadt, 19 March 1257. 23 lines in cursiva script on one membrane, 360 x 245mm, contemporary and ?17th-century dockets on dorse (light soiling affecting the first line of text), seals of Volrad and of the chapter of Halberstadt pendant on red and white cords (small losses);
Werner, Bardolf and Otto von Hadersleve [residents of Helmstedt; the family are also recorded as having donated land in 1270 to the nearby monastery of Althaldensleben], granting by unanimous consent to Marienthal two manses in the campus of Werdesleve which the brothers Heidenric and Johann von Otenleuc have resigned to them, Emerberch, 20 January 1287, 13 lines in praegothic script on one membrane, 190 x 270mm, contemporary and ?17th-century dockets on dorse (soiling chiefly affecting the margins, creasing), two large, shield-shaped seals pendant on green and white cords;
The brothers Johann, Ludolf and Bruno von Brunesrode granting in return for 8 silver marks from the monks of Marienthal eight manses in the vill of Emmersted [a district of Helmstedt], the witnesses including their ‘cognatus’ (brother-in-law) Godefrid von Varesveld, n.p., 1280 (no day or month given), 16 lines in cursiva script on one membrane, 210 x 165mm, 2 early dockets on dorse (lightly worn), attractive shield-shaped seals of Godefrid and of the brothers in brown wax pendant on blue and white cords;
with two grants by the Bürgermeister and council of the city of Bremen relating to property at Murkenbruch, 25 June 1600 and 7 January 1601, on vellum, with seals.
The monastic community at the Cistercian abbey of Marienthal – founded by Frederik II, Count Palatine of Saxony, on land near the town of Helmstedt – endured until its dissolution in 1569.
