ARETINO, Pietro (1402-1556). Capricciosi & Piaceuoli Ragionamenti. [Bound with:] [FRANCO, Niccolo (1515-1570).] La Puttana Errante. Cosmopoli [but Leyden]: [Jean Elzevier,] 1660.

Two works in one volume, octavo (155 x 99 mm). 541 pages and 54 pages. With the final blanks. (Occasional minor spotting.) Contemporary, probably original vellum, spine titled in manuscript (front joint starting at the head, light soiling).

IMPORTANT FIRST ELZEVIER EDITION of Aretino, which also includes THE EARLIEST KNOWN EDITION OF LA PUTTANA ERRANTE: ‘the first imaginative prose work which deals directly and exclusively with physical sexual satisfaction’ (Foxon); whereas Ragionamenti, itself the most celebrated work of Renaissance erotic literature, is primarily a satirical work. This edition is the first, and more attractive, of two editions published by Elzevier with the date 1660; this true first edition has La Puttana Errante in 54 pages, whereas the second edition, probably actually published in 1668, has that text set in 38 pages. AN EXCELLENT COPY IN ITS FIRST BINDING. Apollinaire Enfer, 220; Foxon Libertine Literature (1965), p.27; Pia Enfer, 1230-1231; Willems 858.
