In sheets as issued in the original printed wrappers, original chemise and slipcase (slipcase lacking one edge). Provenance: engraved bookplate, laid in, with the motto 'sois et reste' -- Hans J. Döpp (small stamp on the limitation and on the verso of each plate).
FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Suzanne Ballivet's illustrations for this book are among the finest produced after the war. One of 25 copies with an additional suite of plates, from an edition of 200 copies only, this one number 21. The text first appeared openly in 1945, with no illustrations, as Prelude charnel by 'Robert Sermaise', when it became an immediate best-seller. Dutel 1751; Kearney 917.
