[BEGIS, Alfred, with DUPONCHEL, Edmond, and HANKEY, Frederick, attributed to.] L'École des Biches ou Moeurs des petites dames de ce temps. Paris [but Brussels]: [Jean-Pierre Blanche,] 1863 [1868].

Quarto (245 x 187 mm). With half-title and publisher’s adverts. Title printed in red and black. Printed on Turkey Mill paper watermarked 1864. (One short repaired tear, occasional light marginal soiling, occasional light spotting.) Contemporary cloth-backed marbled boards, green spine label gilt (joints starting at the head-caps, extremities rubbed, small loss on the front cover). Provenance: manuscript deletion, in pencil, on p.44 annotated ‘vulgaire’ -- J.B. Rund (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. LARGE-PAPER ISSUE: one of 2 copies on papier anglais. There is scant evidence as to the authorship of this often reprinted work conceived as a continuation to Chorier’s Académie des dames. Gay-Lemonnyer attributes it to the cream of erotic bibliophily; Dutel, who gives a long biography of the men in his note, seems to agree. In May 1868 a tribunal in Lille ruled that L’École des Biches be destroyed, and condemned its publisher J.-P. Blanche to six months in jail. AE and ABPC record only two copies at auction; WorldCat lists three in public institutions worldwide. Number 7 of 64 copies only. Dutel A-307; Gay-Lemonnyer II, 58; Perceau 36-1; Pia Enfer, 396.
