A form of Bildungsroman, describing the childhood and school days of a young girl who, together with her fellows, is the subject of frequent and lovingly-described episodes of birching. The otherwise chaste nature of the tale is noted in the concluding note, added in another hand, which records ‘The heroine did not get married, nor has she yet been initiated into the delights of love, only receiving a few offers which she has not accepted’. The photographs, which similarly pay little tribute to conventional erotic criteria, bear variant page numbers on the verso, suggesting that they may originally have been included in a different manuscript.
