FLAGELLATION -- REBELL, Hugues (1867-1905, pseudonym of Georges Grassal de Choffat). An album of flagellant drawings. France, c.1900.
Over 80 pencil and pen-and-ink drawings, some of these hand-coloured, on paper, sometimes scraps, mounted into an album, octavo (212 x 168 mm). (Album margins yellowed, occasional soiling.) Light brown cloth, the front cover centred with a scrolling ornament in blind and with a blind ruled border and titled in manuscript ‘Dessins de Hugues Rebell. Collection Ms Boisson’, spine lettered ‘Hugues Rebell’ in manuscript, edges blue. Provenance: Marius Boisson (binding).
AN ALBUM OF FLAGELLANT AND SCATOLOGICAL DRAWINGS BY REBELL, a number of them on the verso of draft manuscripts, one of these a letter to his brother. The album also includes a six page manuscript titled ‘Les filles de Loth’, and another on nine smaller leaves titled ‘La fille de ferme fesée’ and ‘Le cul trompeur’. Rebell published a number of works on this theme, among them Journal d’une enfant vicieuse (1903). He collaborated with various authors, including Marius Boisson, to whom this album passed, and with whom he wrote Femmes châtiées and Cinq histoires vécues.
