Quarto (285 x 190 mm). Text printed in purple reproducing the author's manuscript. Extra-illustrated with 33 original colour pencil drawings by Edouard Chimot, signed 'Chimot' or initialled 'Ch', eleven of these full-page. (Edges lightly yellowed, occasional light soiling, occasional light spotting.) Original paper wrappers printed in black (the gatherings unstitched by Chimot to facilitate the drawing, some wear and short tears to the spine panel); in a fine 20th-century purple half morocco chemise and slipcase, spine gilt in compartments and with brown morocco labels (chemise spine lightly and evenly faded, front joint starting at the foot, slipcase split along one edge, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Marquis de Casteja (binding).

FIRST EDITION. A UNIQUE COPY OF THE AUTHOR'S MASTERPIECE, ILLUMINATED THROUGHOUT WITH ORIGINAL DRAWINGS BY CHIMOT: they are the original drawings for the edition of this work published c.1940 reproducing only the twelve full-page illustrations (see Dutel 2524). This superb book is one of the 20th-century highlights in the Fekete collection. Edouard Chimot (1880-1959) produced engravings for the works of numerous authors, including Verlaine's Parallelement (1931). The Nordmann collection included a lesser work by Louÿs, Poemes Inedits (1938), also extra-illustrated by Chimot, but this one with just ten drawings (Christie's Paris, 14-15 December 2006, lot 319). Although published anonymously, the edition reproduces the author's distinctive purple-ink handwriting and is printed on paper watermarked 'Syuol Erreip', the author's name in reverse. Published in a very small, unspecified number of copies circulated privately. For Chimot see also lot 47. Dutel 2516; Pia Enfer, 1445.
