Octavo (169 x 105 mm). Six hand-coloured plates from a later French translation. (Light spotting on the title, last leaf with small marginal losses, occasional light soiling, the additional plates with some colour oxidized.) Near-contemporary tan pebble-grained cloth (light soiling). Provenance: J.B. Rund (bookplate, pencilled annotations on the endpaper).

FIRST EDITION. Illustrated with hand-coloured plates from a later French translation issued by Brancart. 'A delightful story in which the mysteries of flagellation are portrayed in a most entertaining and voluptuous manner; it should be read by all; especially Votaries of the Birch' (advert for a later edition, quoted in Mendes). Rare: Mendes records only two copies, one at the British Library. Mendes X-57, and 145 (a later edition).
