(Fore-margin of additional title just trimmed by the binder, one plate faintly dampstained and lightly browned, occasional light spotting.) Contemporary calf, spine with gilt-ruled raised bands, edges gilt (corners rubbed, sides lightly darkened by a stain). Provenance: Louis Rudolph, Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg (1671-1735; bookplate, stamps of his library at Wolfenbüttel).
FIRST EDITION. THE DUKE OF BRUNSWICK’S COPY of an uncommon book on the world’s oldest profession, including a description of Amsterdam’s sporting houses and music halls, and a discussion of working girls’ mores. The account takes the form of a vision during which the author is guided by a subterranean spirit through the city’s dark alleys. According to Gay, the book may have been written by a Rotterdam chief of police visiting Amsterdam to study its vice. Brunet Suppl. II, 336 (‘very rare’); Dutel A-947; Gay-Lemonnyer III, 893; Pia Enfer, 1197.
