ROJAN [also ROJANKOVKSY, Feodor (1891-1970)] -- [LOUYS, Pierre (1870-1925).] Manuel de civilité. [Paris: Simon Kra, 1926.]
Octavo (190 x 140 mm). Text printed within blue ruled borders. Extra illustrated with 77 original pen and ink and watercolour drawings by Rojan. (Occasional light marginal spotting.) Contemporary brown half leather with the original printed wrappers bound in, marbled endpapers and sides, matching slipcase (spine lightly faded, slipcase with corners rubbed and with small splits at aperture).
FIRST EDITION, A UNIQUE COPY OF THIS CLASSIC WORK, ENTIRELY ILLUMINATED BY ROJAN, one of the great 20th-century erotic artists. Manuel de civilité, a parody of the etiquette guides so popular in the belle époque, is 'certainly the most hilarious text among the vast clandestine production of the author... Louÿs must have felt particularly inspired, because this free spirit enjoyed nothing more than to take-down and parody the most innocent and academic texts' (Eros invaincu). Nordmann, who was especially fond of this text, also had a copy illuminated by Rojan (Christie's Paris, 14-15 December 2006, lot 315; €11,400). Number 586 of 600 copies. Eros invaincu 91; Perceau 332; Pia Enfer, 865; Dutel 1916.
