Octavo (146 x 105 mm). 57 engraved plates including the title and frontispiece. (Mounted on stubs throughout, some soiling and spotting.) Later tan morocco, spine with raised bands, one compartment titled in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers (extremities rubbed).
FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE CELEBRATION OF ONANISM, ‘that most philosophical of mankind’s pleasures’, and the Muse of countless talented men and women, including Socrates, Mirabeau and Jean-Jacques Rousseau (introduction). WorldCat locates copies at the British Library and the Bibliothèque nationale de France only. AE and ABPC record only two copies at auction in over 40 years: the Nordmann and Komrij copies.
