18TH CENTURY
The shallow well is decorated with a scene from the Xixiang Ji, "Romance of the Western Chamber", depicting a scholar and an attendant in a window overlooking a maiden in a rocky fenced garden. The reverse with a calligraphic inscription, signed and with two seals in red enamel, all surrounded by striding qilin amongst scrolling lotus on a yellow ground.
