The front of the boulder is deeply carved with a grotto scene depicting the luohan seated on a rock holding a book in his right hand, beside a censer emitting wispy clouds of smoke. The reverse is carved with tall trees in the foreground, with a cascading waterfall in the far distance. The stone is of a pale tone, with very minor snowy flecks and russet inclusions.

Compare the present lot to two jade carvings depicting the same theme of luohan among rocks, one in the collection of the British Museum and the other from the Sir Joseph Hotung Collection, both illustrated by J. Rawson, Chinese Jade: From the Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1995, p. 410, fig.1 and pl. 29:19.
