A THANGKA DEPICTING JAMBHALA
TIBET, 18TH CENTURY
Jambhala is seated in lalitasana on a lotus base placed in a pond within the compound of a walled multi-tiered pagoda constructed behind him. His right hand is holding the lemon fruit while his left supports the mongoose. Around his middle is draped his dhoti. A scarf floats around his shoulders. His wrathful face displays protruding eyes below raised bushy eyebrows. Moustache and beard frame his mouth. The highest floor of the pavilion shows the blue Vajrapani brandishing a vajra. The god of richness is surrounded by eight smaller emanations, all riding horses and holding the mongoose. The upper register has the red coloured Amitayus, Padmasambhava carrying vajra and kapala, lama and Syamatara. The lower register shows Shri Devi riding her mule, a blue form of Jambhala and a Tara in each corner. All scenes are set in a mountainous landscape.
25 ½ in. x 18 ¾ in. (64.8 cm. x 47.6 cm.)
