A THANGKA DEPICTING SAMVARA
TIBET, 18TH CENTURY
Samvara is seated in vajrasana on a lotus dais with both hands resting in dhyanamudra on his lap. He is embracing his female consort. Clad in a dhoti, cape draped around his shoulders, its streamers encircling his arms with its finials falling over the lotus base. His face displays a meditative expression with downcast eyes. His consort is offering him the contents of a skull-cup. Both are placed against a mandorla. A dish with offerings is set below them. They are surrounded by a myriad of minute lamas probably belonging to the ‘Dri.gung school.
26 in. x 18 ¼ in. (66 cm. x 46.3 cm.)
