A BLUE AND WHITE EWER
JIAJING UNDERGLAZE BLUE SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1522-1566), 17TH CENTURY EUROPEAN GILT METAL MOUNTS
The ewer is decorated to each side with a peach-shaped cartouche enclosing a scene of scholars at leisure playing weiqi, surrounded by peonies to one side and pine, bamboo and a crane to the other. The cartouches are bordered by several phoenix in flight. The neck is applied with a mythical beast-head spout decorated with stylised clouds. The cover is further embellished with a band of phoenix and floral motifs reserved on a diaper ground, encircling the metal final.
