DAOGUANG IRON RED SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1821-1850)
The exterior of the bowl is decorated with two scenes, one depicting figures processing silk cocoons, the other with a farmer tilling a field with a plough which is drawn by a water buffalo. Each scene is accompanied by a poetic descriptive inscription, and three iron-red seal marks. The scalloped rim is highlighted in gilt.
4½ in. (15 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The poem about silk production is from Zhi Tu Ershi Si Shou (Twenty-four Poems on Weaving Pictures) entitled "Ze Jian" (which may be translated as "On Choosing Cocoons").
The poem about field tilling is from the Gengzhi Tu Ershi Yi Shou (Twenty-one Poems on Cultivation) entitled "Ba nou" (which may be translated as "Raking").
