The present watch is one of the exceedingly rare "Polara" LED models by Jaeger-LeCoultre to appear in public. Made in the mid-1970s, it impresses with its highly unusual, futuristic design and the combination of sterling silver with 14K gold appliques, all with bark-finish decoration. It furthermore features five functions, including day, date and chronograph, and is preserved in very good overall condition.

The first digital electronic wristwatch showing the time in numerical digits by using a light emitting diode display or LED was developed in the early 1970s jointly by Hamilton Watch Company and Electro-Data. It was inspired by the futuristic digital clock that Hamilton had made for the 1968 science fiction movie "2001: A Space Odyssey". The power source battery fuels the quartz crystal to vibrate. The vibrations are then translated by an integrated circuit into information for the display. When the relevant button is pushed, the time and other indications shine in bright red-light numerals on the synthetic ruby "time screen" or dial for a short period of time.

The LED module of the present watch was supplied by the American company Hughes Aircraft and is fitted with five functions.
