Lot Essay

With Audemars Piguet fitted presentation box and outer packaging.

According to the Archives of Audemars Piguet, the present watch was sold in 1992 in Switzerland.

The celebrated Royal Oak model was introduced into the market in 1972. Commissioned by Audemars Piguet with the development of a sport's watch never seen before, Gérald Genta designed a watch comprising a variety of new features. He conceived a system which, by compressing bezel, rubber ring and case via the bezel's eight screws, rendered it into a perfect waterproof design. The distinguished look of the Royal Oak, meant to resemble a diver fitted with a scaphander helmet on the shore of Lake Geneva, has never been equalled.

From its introduction to the present day, the Royal Oak, epitome of a luxury sports wristwatch with its unique octagonal screwed porthole bezel, continues to captivate watch collectors and aficionados with undiminished power. The celebrated model sired a dynasty of timepieces ranging from basic time and date watches to the "Royal Oak Grande Complication" with more than 600 parts and numerous functions.
