The reference 6036 offered here for sale is one of the most appealing examples of the celebrated "Dato Compax" to appear in public in recent years. Preserved in excellent original overall condition, it is stands out by the beautifully silvered dial which in its over 50 years of existence has never been subject to any cosmetical enhancement. Presumably exchanged during a servicing around a decade after the sale of this "Dato Compax", it is distinguished by the absence of the designation "Chronograph" after "Oyster", a variant used exclusively for the succeeding reference 6236. It features the date ring with blue Arabic numerals, the "6" and "9" no longer "open" as in previous generations, the overall look further enhancing the appeal of this rare chronograph. The condition of its two-piece case is in accordance with the untouched dial, displaying full proportions without any signs of careless polishing.
The highly collectible Rolex Oyster triple calendar chronograph watches, also known as Dato Compax models, consist of four different series. Famed French Olympic skiing legend and Rolex enthusiast Jean-Claude Killy has sported a Dato Compax in the past and the model hence has been dubbed by watch enthusiasts the "Jean-Claude Killy".
The two earlier series of the Dato Compax model carry the reference numbers 4767 and 5036, the fourth and last one reference 6236, fitted with a three-piece case.
Reference 6036
Reference 6036, the third generation of the celebrated "Dato Compax" Oyster triple calendar chronograph model presented by Rolex, was available with various dial layouts, cased mainly in yellow gold and in stainless steel.
Examples of reference 6036 are described and illustrated in I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 380 - 401.
