Lot Essay

Jean-Baptiste-Bernard Demay (1784-1848) had an exceptionally long and illustrious career as a menuisier. He supplied seat furniture to Marie Antoinette in the 1780s and to Napoleon's Garde-meuble Impérial in 1811, remaining in business into the reign of Louis Philippe. Examples of his work on display in public collections include a suite of Louis XVI seat furniture at the Metropolitan Museum, New York (1973.305.1-3) and an Empire fauteuil at the Musée national du château de Malmaison (L. de Groër, Les arts décoratifs de 1780 à 1850, Fribourg, 1985, p. 136, fig. 249).
