Lot Essay

Walter Greaves a painter of River Landscapes, the son of a boat builder, who ferried both Turner and Whistler across the river Thames. In 1863 Walter and his brother Harry became unpaid studio assistants to Whistler. Walter said, 'He taught us to piant and we taught him the waterman's jerk.'
