Anne Estelle Rice (1879-1959) met Fergusson in the summer of 1906, before moving to Paris where they became lovers. She was an American illustrator on a commission to produce illustrations for a Philadelphia magazine showing the chic Parisian fashion scene. However, her exposure to Post-Impressionism and Fauvism in Paris, together with the support and encouragement of Fergusson, led her to focus her attention on painting. The influence was symbiotic however, and she became an inspiration and muse to Fergusson at this time. In the present work there is a real sense of familiarity and tenderness, showing her in a very private and intimate moment.
Their relationship continued until 1913 when Fergusson met the London dancer Margaret Morris who was then performing in Paris.
