Lot Essay

A similar boot-jack signed by Christopher Wilcock, was sold Christie's, London, 18 September 2003, lot 101. Several Wilcock's are recorded in the Gillows' records including 'Crs. Wilcock' who is recorded in 1837 and 1839 and is most probably the same man (The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 973). The quality and use of the reeded column is typical Gillows' output in the early 19th century.
