Lot Essay

The Islamic form and the Asian inspired carving of the clear and translucent-ruby glass on this vessel are particularly subtle, with contrasting matte and polished 'gem-like’ surfaces that appear to float above the opalescent ground. For an example of this form, also carved with these distinctive features, see Sotheby’s, London, 15 July 2004, lot 181, this vase now conserved at The Corning Museum of Glass (inv. no. 2004.2.12). For a vase of similar form, signed G. Woodall, see R. and L. Grover, English Cameo Glass, New York, 1980, p.19, fig.C1.
