The present vase was exhibited in the London International Exposition of 1862 where it was noted that the objects on display by Sèvres were "in some respects superior to its productions in the time of Louis Quinze". A similar example with a variant frieze, also signed by Paul Roussel, is now at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (no. BK-1987-14). Interestingly, the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres archives record a pair of 'vases étrusques de Naples peinture de figures représentant les travaux et les plaisirs des champs' (Vj'64.fol.5.) by Paul Roussel in March 1958. The Rijksmuseum piece, with similar scenes and marks is almost certainly constituting a pair with the present.
For a Pompeian red-ground example, see T. Prèaud, Sèvres à nos jours, p. 298, fig. 396.

Paul Marie Roussel, French (1804-1877) is recorded as a painter on glass at Sèvres from 1837-1849; and as a painter from 1850-1871.
Jules Pierre Michel Diéterle is recorded as the chef des travaux d'art; formes et décors from 1848-1855.
