This lot is offered without reserve. MEDITERRANEAN MAJOLICA FROM THE MONTUPET ESTATE (LOTS 63-71) The following nine lots of majolica from southern French factories are from a large collection formed by the celebrated French novelist Janine Montupet (1919-2013). Born in Oran, French Algeria of Provencal, Corsican, Italian, and Irish ancestry, Mme Montupet moved to Paris as a teenager, marrying industrialist Jean Montupet in 1947. Over the next fifty years, she wrote twenty novels, set in the places she knew best – French Colonial Algeria, Provence, Normandy. She based her stories on historic facts surrounding industries or social situations specific to each location - the social mixing of French colonials and Arabs in Algeria, lace making in Normandy, perfume making in Grasse, the women’s shoe and food industries to name but a few. Along with her growing family, Mme Montupet moved to the United States thirty years ago, establishing a home in the mountains of Idaho. To this rural retreat, she brought the sun and freshness of her Mediterranean childhood by surrounding herself with the bright colors and shiny textures of the flower, bird and animal forms for which the southern French faïenceries are justly famous. Discerningly selected with the keen advice of the Parisian trade, the collection features works by the celebrated firms of Delphin and Jerôme Massier. The balance of her extraordinary majolica collection will be offered in an Interiors sale in January 2015.
