Lot Essay

Amélie de Montfort, whom Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux wed in 1869, is the subject of the present portrait bust, which was completed only months prior to their marriage in April of the same year. Examples of this relatively rare model, which was edited by the Carpeaux atelier beginning in 1874, were cast with alternate orange blossom arrangements and jewelry embellishments (Poletti & Richarme, 2003, BU 31, p. 132.). A terracotta example of La Fiancée was sold Collection Fabius Frères, Sotheby's, Paris, 26 October 2011, lot 132 (54,750 Euros).
