HOCKNEY, David (b. 1937). Six Fairy Tales. London: Petersburg Press, 1970. 2° (455 x 310mm). 39 etched illustrations each with tissue guards, a suite of six loose etched plates, each signed in pencil by the artist below image, captioned in ink to verso ‘Grimm Ed. A. 29/100. (Light adhesive marks on verso of loose plates.) Original blue calf, black title on spine, matching slipcase (edges of slipcase rubbed).
NUMBER 29 OF THE LIMITED EDITION ‘A’ OF 100 COPIES. Inscribed in pencil by the artist to Editions leaf: 'David Hockney, Ed A. 51/100’. The 39 etchings illustrating the Fairy Tales were drawn directly onto copper plates and etched by David Hockney in London between May and November 1969. The papers were made in a pure white rag waterleaf and hotpressed, and watermarked throughout DH:PP, by W.S. Hodgkinson of Bath. Each edition was bound in a different blue and all binding and boxes were made by hand by Rudolf Rieser in Cologne. The book was printed in four editions of 100 with 15 artist’s proofs, each including the Six Fairy Tales and 39 etchings. Each edition has a different set of loose etchings and the present edition A contains: A Wooden Landscape, Rapunzel growing in the gardem, Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair, The sexton disguised as a ghost, A room full of straw and Pleading for the child. On completion of the printing of the editions the plates were defaced by diagonal scores and two cancellation proofs pulled. No further impressions can be taken.
