CIRCA 1754, BLUE INTERLACED L MARK ENCLOSING DATE LETTER A, FOUR DOTS MARK, INCISED .P.J

Water-jugs and basins were intended for use and were displayed on the dressing-table. This jug is recorded in four sizes and was combined with one of seven basin designs. The first and fourth sizes are listed in the Sèvres stock lists of 1752 and the second and third sizes in 1753 though the model was probably in production even earlier. Up until the 1770s the cover was loose when it left the factory and was subsequently attached. Those supplied by Duvaux in the 1750s were either gold or silver-gilt. Two Vincennes covered jugs and covers of the same form, decorated in gilding with birds in flight were sold from the Estate of the late 6th Earl of Lord Rosebery and his family, Mentmore, Sotheby's, 24 May 1977, lots 2001 and 2002.
