Lot Essay

The third size, of which this is an example, first appears in the sales records in October 1756, with the price ranging from 9 livres for a flowered jug to 108 livres for a green-ground example with garlands. See Rosalind Savill, The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1988, Vol. II, pp. 564-569, nos. 374-6, for three examples of this form and further discussion of the type.

Jean-Baptiste Tandart, l'aîné, was a flower painter active at Vincennes and Sèvres from 1754 to 1800.
