rectangular box, the cover boldly chased with a romantic couple standing in a flower-filled landscape with a bird flying above, the lady holding a spray of flowers in her right hand, the sides chased with various birds, a peacock, a cockerel, a stork and a pair of crested doves, the base chased with a floral spray with a posy at each corner, all on a tremblé ground, the interior of cover inset with a glazed rectangular watercolour on ivory portrait miniature by Christoffer Foltmar of a young lady, in blue dress with white lace trim, her left hand holding a flower, in original fitted brown leather case

Christoffer Foltmar (1718-1759) was a musician as well as being a painter. Born in Copenhagen he was appointed miniature painter to the Court of Denmark in 1748. Miniatures and enamels by both him and his brother are in the Danish National Museum in Frederiksborg near Hillerød.
