The château de Ménars was acquired in 1760 by Madame de Pompadour who reputedly paid almost 1,000,000 livres and sold some of her pearl bracelets to meet the first payment. On her death in 1764 the château passed to her brother, Abel-François Poisson de Vandières, marquis de Marigny and Director General of the Bâtiments du Roi. The artist's dedications on the present miniatures are to him.
Another topographical scene by this artist, signed and dated 1767, was formerly in the collection of D. David-Weill and subsequently Sir Charles Clore, sold Sotheby's, London, 10 November 1986, lot 26.
