It is in its original silver-gilt frame, with the initials 'J. R. Bart.' on the reverse. Sir John Reresby, a devoted follower of the exiled Stuarts, was born in 1634, and died in 1689; both his 'Travels' and 'Memoirs' are of value.').

The sitter was the eldest son of Sir John Reresby (d.1646) of Thryberg Hall. His mother, Frances, was the daughter of Edmund Yarburgh of Snaith Hall, Yorkshire. Reresby’s famous Memoirs of Sir John Reresby was first published in 1734. These memoirs are an important source of social and political history of England in the late seventeenth century. They record his friendship with Henrietta Maria, widow of Charles I, in France and his return to England and political career after the Restoration.
