The Master

As mentioned in the note on lot 439, it is believed that such apostle spoons would have appeared as a set of twelve. The ultimate 13th addition would be a spoon with a finial cast as the Master, representing Christ. As a result, fewer examples of the Master exist than those representing many of the other saints. Commander and Mrs How describe the present spoon as '... highly important' (Commander G. E. P. How and J. P. How, op. cit., London, 1952, vol. II, pp. 390-391, pl. 8). It is first recorded as being 'on the market' in 1952 (How, op. cit. p. 390).
