An inventive and thoroughly modern photographer, Sherrill V. Schell was a celebrated New York figure during the 1930s and 1940s. His modernist images of the city employing severe angles and unconventional lighting, gained him champions such as the art critic Henry McBride and Lincoln Kerstein who praised his talents. His work graced the pages of The New York Times among other publications and the influential dealer Julien Levy featured his work in the exhibition Photographs of New York by New York Photographers in 1932.
