The following lots (3121 -3180) in the current sale are from the collection of a Hong Kong collector. Collected over 35 years, these fine and delightful jade miniatures mostly date to the Ming and Qing periods, and were selected with an expert eye with an emphasis on quality and material. The collector is an admirer of jades, old watches and ivory carvings. His jade collection stems from his love of history and preference for small pieces of works of art. In his youth, the collector travelled frequently to Europe and America for business and visited many museums in his spare time. His fascination with archaic jades was spurred by these museum visits, where he encountered beautifully preserved examples with intricate carvings, some of which dating over two millennium years old. He became an avid buyer of archaic jades, at first buying indiscriminately things he found attractive. He would often take three or four pieces of jades with him on long business trips, so that he could study them carefully and handle them without distraction. Later on, his collecting gradually and surely became more and more discerning and selective. He would carefully examine the material, craftsmanship, design, colour, patina and condition of a piece, before deciding on a purchase - these criteria are clearly reflected on the pieces in his collection. He particularly prized pieces that have auspicious connotations hidden in the subject matter. Most of his pieces were purchased at auction or from dealers in Hong Kong, Europe or America. Some of them were acquired by exchanging with other collector friends. Three of his favourite pieces in the collection, the yellow jade pendant (lots 3155) and two white jade puppies (lots 3127 and 3128), for example, were acquired in 1992 from Mr. Tam Tai, a well-known Hong Kong restaurateur and collector, by exchanging two archaic jade bi discs from his own collection. The collector still reads museum journals and catalogues on jades religiously, and enjoys regular museum visits. He continues to exchange ideas with other likeminded collectors from all different backgrounds and professions, and the knowledge gained from these exchanges often helps to refine his collection.
