A LARGE CELADON JADE RUYI SCEPTRE
19TH CENTURY
The sceptre is carved with the Eight Immortals, with the ruyi-head depicting four Immortals at leisure amongst a building and a pine tree. The shaft and terminal are both carved with a shaped panel each enclosing two Immortals in a rocky landscape. The stone is of an even tone, with very minor darker inclusions to one side.

Lot Essay

A sceptre of this nature is rare due to the sheer size of the boulder required to carve it. The ruyi sceptre, a longstanding auspicious symbol in Chinese art gained popularity in the Qing dynasty when it was often used as a gift to the Emperor on his birthday.
