A VERY RARE PAIR OF LARGE IMPERIAL GILT-COPPER REPOUSSE ENAMEL DOUBLE-GOURD VASES AND COVERS
LATE QING DYNASTY, 1850-1911
Each vase is formed as a double gourd and decorated all over with a repousse design of leaves, star-shaped flowers and scrolling tendrils from which hang double-gourds of beige soapstone, all set against a ring-punched ground. The leaves are filled in with enamel in shades of turquoise, deep blue and green; and the star-shaped flowers inlaid with carved pink sea shells. The base of each vase is chased with an apocryphal Qianlong mark.
