AN IMPERIAL EDICT
DATED TO THE TWENTY-NINTH DAY OF THE TENTH MONTH OF THE SECOND YEAR OF TIANQI, CORRESPONDING TO AD 1622, AND OF THE PERIOD
The edict is written on a woven silk brocade and mounted as a handscroll. The Chinese text refers to Liu Hongbao and is followed by the date of the second year of the Tianqi Emperor, corresponding to 1622, stamped with two large seals. The brocade begins with the four characters Fengtian Gaoming, 'By Command of Heaven' and is woven with the date 45th year of Wanli, corresponding to 1618.

It is much rarer to see an Imperial edict from the Ming Dynasty than the Qing dynasty.

Liu Hongbao was a native of Jinjiang county, Fujian province, and attained his Jinshi degree in the 14th year of Wanli Emperor (corresponding to 1586).
