The white marble body set with lapis lazuli veneers, the hinged cover with diagonal silver section applied with a Russian Imperial crown above the initial E, probably for Princess Catherine (Ekaterina) Yurievskaya (1878-1959), youngest child of Tsar Alexander II of Russia, gilt interior to mounts

Princess Catherine moved to Hayling Island, Hampshire in 1932 where she was supported with an allowance from Queen Mary until the latter's death in 1953 when Catherine was left almost penniless and started selling off her possessions. She lived in Hayling Island until her death in 1959
