Lot Essay

The arms are for Edward Lake D.D. (1641-1704), tutor and chaplain to Princesses Mary and Anne, daughters of King James II, later Queens Anne and Mary. A renowned preacher, he was archdeacon of Exeter Cathedral. He specifically mentions this box in his will probated on 16 February, 1704, "I give to my brother Nathaniel Lake a ring of twenty shillings.... and my.....silver tobacco box..."
