Portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587), half-length, in a black dress, a lace ruff and collar, a lace cap and a muslin veil

The present lot derives from a miniature portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots by Nicholas Hilliard, of which one version is in the Royal Collection and a second in a Private Collection. Various paintings have derived their composition from this prototype, such as the full-length after Hilliard in the collection of the Marquess of Salisbury.
