The present relief is almost certainly the marble bas-relief depicting Une Vestale that Boizot exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1777 (Lami, loc. cit.). Boizot was a highly respected sculptor during the reign of Louis XVI and was known for his soft, graceful style and his elegant portrait busts, and this relief is typical of his oeuvre (Picquenard, loc. cit.). He was appointed to the prestigious post of Director of the sculpture studio at the Sèvres porcelain factory, succeeding Falconet, and held the post from 1773 until 1800.
