Surmounted by a putto ensconced in clouds, and flanked by two classically draped maidens representing the sciences and the arts, on a shaped white marble plinth applied with leaf tip-cast moulding, and foliate-cast mounts, on ball feet, the dial with Arabic chapters and signed 'Andre Hessen a Paris', the twin barrel movement with silk suspension and countwheel strike to bell

André Hessen, a Swedish clockmaker, was active in Paris 1775-1791.

François Rémond is credited as designing this model of mantel clock known as 'L'Etude' but the design was owned by Dominique Daguerre. The division of labour between the clockmaker and bronzier often allowed for these designs to be adapted and altered slightly so variations to the model was common. The present clock is surmounted by a putto rather than an eagle as is generally seen.
