CIRCA 1775, POSSIBLY BY JEAN-BAPTISTE OSMOND
The enamelled dial with Roman and Arabic chapters framed by laurel leaf garlands and acanthus leaves, surmounted by urn finial, the single barrel movement with silk suspension, pull repeat and strike to bell
19 ½ in. (49.5 cm.) high
Literature
This cartel clock adorned with a lidded urn finial, laurel garlands and acanthus leaves epitomises the goût Grec, popular in France between 1765-1775. Similar designs and signed models were executed by Jean-Charles Delafosse, Pierre-Antoine Foullet and Jean-Baptiste Osmond (H. Ottomeyer, & P. Pröschel; Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I pp. 182-185 figs. 3.8.1-3.8.11 and vol. II p. 544, figs. 6 & 7). An almost identical cartel clock and a barometer, also unsigned, are in the collection of the Louvre (D. Alcouffe, Gilt bronzes in the Louvre, Paris, 2004, pp. 134-135)
